The Changing Faces of Leadership
-- Ronald J Burke
In a democracy, if growth and development are not perceived as sustainable, mutually beneficial to stakeholders, fair and inclusive, businesses and the market itself may face much greater questioning and challenge. The benefits of greater government intervention could be problematic given the skill, experience and other barriers to the effective implementation of public policy. In contrast, innovative, responsible and sustainable responses from business leaders could lead to less intervention, greater reliance upon market mechanisms and closer and more productive public-private collaboration as each better understands and appreciates the contribution of the other. The face of corporate leadership is changing. There are several reasons why organizational leaders today look different from those of several decades ago. Given the changes in country demographics, business conditions, and the business environment globally, it is inevitable that the face of leadership has changed and will continue to change. The face of leadership is changing in all sectors, and faster in some sectors than the others. There will be “blips” along the way as these new faces realize their potential through making significant leadership accomplishments.

Who Is an Effective Leader? – Ways
of Measuring Leadership Effectiveness
-- Riham Moawad and Stephanie Jones
Managers are expected to lead their departments, manage their staff and achieve their objectives to ensure the success of their organizations. Some researchers emphasize that leaders and managers alone influence the organizations’ overall performance, while others argue that besides the existence of such influence, the state of the economy and the attractiveness of organizations’ products and services also contribute to the overall performance of the organizations. Some leaders and managers are almost exclusively judged by their ability to meet organizational objectives and thus improve the overall performance of the organizations. Some studies have argued that organizations led by high-performing leaders showed a significantly increased ability to reach their organizational targets. This may, of course, depend a lot on the organizational structure and leader’s role, and in particular on the organizational objectives set. If these objectives are too ambitious, it can be very difficult for any leader to ensure their achievement.

Understanding Leadership Through
the Arts
-- Kurt April, Charlie Beall and Kai Peters
This study seeks to elucidate an alternative form of leadership training—that of improvisational theater—in which acting under conditions of uncertainty, accepting offers, crafting a disciplined imagination, suspending judgment, letting go, being present and enhancing awareness skills may become learnable components of leadership development. The question was whether improvisation can transform the thinking and orientation of individuals in such a way as to make them efficient leaders. And the study found that improvisation may encourage creativity, possibility, resourcefulness and an ability to manage uncertainty and ambiguity, provided that it is appropriately applied and practiced.

Tomorrow’s Governance and Corporate Leadership: Succession and/or Renewal?
-- Colin Coulson-Thomas
Corporate governance has been in the spotlight long enough to have a history, but what of its future and tomorrow’s corporate leadership? What roles will succession planning, fast-tracking, and director and board development play in ensuring that directors are competent and boards are effective? Many entrepreneurs would gain from directors of integrity, who demonstrate a passion for growing businesses and who can think for themselves and are able to put the interests of the company before their own. The corporate governance community should reflect upon how their experience might be drawn upon and how their practices might be amended to help this process and better support enterprise and entrepreneurship.
